Mount Vernon Graduation Parade

For the first time, the Mount Vernon School District celebrated its high school graduating class with a parade through downtown Mount Vernon. To mark the occasion, light poles were adorned with green and white ribbons and balloons.

“Mount Vernon is amazing and rallying around our students,” said Paige Bird, college and career specialist at the school. “It takes a whole community.”

“We want to send the message that high school graduation is important,” Principal Rod Merrell said. “This is why we are here, and I think sometimes we lose sight of that.”

Starting at the Mount Vernon City Library, about 250 graduating seniors walked north along Cleveland Avenue, then continued up First Street and over the Second Street overpass back to the high school.
